Marilyn Smith-Mooney moved to Punta Gorda in 1993
from Long Island, NY, where she had attended St.
Joseph's College, School of Business Administration
and earned her Certificate in Leadership & Human
Resources Development.
The early portion of her 30-year career in the
private sector focused primarily on the field of
architecture and construction for municipal,
commercial and religious projects; while the latter
involved such corporate management positions as
Administration & Human Resources Manager, Director
of Corporate Development and Director of Materials
Management for a leading U.S. cosmetics packaging
manufacturer.
In the midst of her career, she added flight
training as an additional pursuit and operated a
flight training and aircraft rental business in
which she served as one of its flight instructors
whenever her primary career pursuits permitted.
Of the five members comprising City Council, Marilyn
has the longest tenure, having held the City
Council's Dist. #2 Seat since November, 1996,
initially by a 15-month appointment and thereafter
by election in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004. She also
has the longest tenure of any woman to ever hold a
seat on the City Council. She has served twice as
Vice Mayor in 1998 and 2000, and twice as Mayor in
2001 and 2002. Her election as Mayor in 2001
distinguished her as the city's first woman mayor in
its 114-year history.
In 2002, Marilyn was included in the CHARLOTTE
SUN's First Annual "SUN 100" list of "the
County's most influential, involved, charitable,
powerful and important people;" and was again
included in the most recent Second Annual "SUN 100"
list for 2003.
Councilmember Smith-Mooney currently holds seats on
the S.W. Florida Regional Planning Council, Peace
River/Manasota Water Planning Alliance, Charlotte
County Tourist Development Council, and the Punta
Gorda Housing Authority's Family Self-Sufficiency
Board. She is a graduate of the Institute for
Elected Municipal Officials, Advanced Institute for
Elected Municipal Officials, Leadership Charlotte
and Local Government Leadership Florida.
Marilyn's current civic involvements include
Charlotte Skate Park board president, United Way
allocations cabinet member, Downtown Focus (a
volunteer think-tank) founder and memberships in
numerous local civic and non-profit organizations.
