Marilyn Smith-Mooney moved to Punta Gorda in 1993 from Long Island, NY, where she had attended St. Joseph's College, School of Business Administration and earned her Certificate in Leadership & Human Resources Development.

The early portion of her 30-year career in the private sector focused primarily on the field of architecture and construction for municipal, commercial and religious projects; while the latter involved such corporate management positions as Administration & Human Resources Manager, Director of Corporate Development and Director of Materials Management for a leading U.S. cosmetics packaging manufacturer.

In the midst of her career, she added flight training as an additional pursuit and operated a flight training and aircraft rental business in which she served as one of its flight instructors whenever her primary career pursuits permitted.

Of the five members comprising City Council, Marilyn has the longest tenure, having held the City Council's Dist. #2 Seat since November, 1996, initially by a 15-month appointment and thereafter by election in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004. She also has the longest tenure of any woman to ever hold a seat on the City Council. She has served twice as Vice Mayor in 1998 and 2000, and twice as Mayor in 2001 and 2002. Her election as Mayor in 2001 distinguished her as the city's first woman mayor in its 114-year history.

In 2002, Marilyn was included in the CHARLOTTE SUN's First Annual "SUN 100" list of "the County's most influential, involved, charitable, powerful and important people;" and was again included in the most recent Second Annual "SUN 100" list for 2003.

Councilmember Smith-Mooney currently holds seats on the S.W. Florida Regional Planning Council, Peace River/Manasota Water Planning Alliance, Charlotte County Tourist Development Council, and the Punta Gorda Housing Authority's Family Self-Sufficiency Board. She is a graduate of the Institute for Elected Municipal Officials, Advanced Institute for Elected Municipal Officials, Leadership Charlotte and Local Government Leadership Florida.

Marilyn's current civic involvements include Charlotte Skate Park board president, United Way allocations cabinet member,  Downtown Focus (a volunteer think-tank) founder and memberships in numerous local civic and non-profit organizations.

Her biography appears in various editions of Marquis' WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD, ... IN AMERICA, ... IN THE EAST, ... IN THE SOUTHEAST, ... IN FINANCE & INDUSTRY, ... OF AMERICAN WOMEN.

Marilyn holds Commercial Pilot and Flight Instructor Certificates; is married to Jack Mooney; and between them, they have three sons, one daughter and four grandchildren.
