There will be a State Hurricane Housing Recovery
Program meeting next week in Port Charlotte. A
representative from the Community Development
Department will attend to obtain information on
funding programs in the City.
The City Manager went over
protocol for Council Meetings with the Department
Directors. Any employee addressing a question
raised during the Council meeting or making a
presentation should state your name and title for
the record. In addition, please refer to the
elected officials as Mayor, Vice-Mayor and/or
Councilmember during the Council meeting.
A workshop with Council is
being scheduled for early June to present the
following topics – the City’s Emergency Management
Program, web site redesign, project implementation
method of delivery, and the
reconstruction/renovation progress of our City
buildings.
Utility Department – The City is getting
high caliber consultants and contractors responding
to our bid requests. The Booster Pump upgrade pilot
test worked very well.
Human
Resources received positive feedback on
the post hurricane stress management training. We
are encouraged that our employees took full
advantage of the training opportunity.
Community Development – The Mitigation
Strategy Plan will be going on the City Council
agenda in June.
Administrative Services reported that the
new Building Codes go into effect on October 1,
2005.
At the Florida Association of
Public Purchasing Officials (FAPPO) conference our
Purchasing Manager learned that cities are setting
up Sister City Cooperative agreements to be used
during storm events. We are in pursuit of such an
agreement with a locality on the east coast.
Finance Department will be making a
presentation at the May 16 City Council meeting
regarding the April 2005 Budget Monitoring Report.
The report highlights status of revenues and
expenditures in the major funds. All of the funds
are in a positive position despite the adverse
impact caused by Charley during the fiscal year.
However, there is a word of caution surfacing from
the report. We have asked departments to go back
and carefully scrutinize this year’s expenditures as
well as requests for next fiscal year due to
preliminary indications from the Property Appraiser
that show a zero increase in taxable assessed
valuation in the City.
Fire
Department – Several years ago, fire
departments were asked to inspect schools in their
area for fire safety. This year, building plan
review of proposed schools is being added to that
requirement. The Fire Chief has met with School
District officials to insure good coordination
between our local fire department and the school
system.
