Police Department will be doing
employee identification cards for all employees on
an on-going basis. This project will be implemented
in a relatively short time frame.
Human Resources will send a
synopsis once a month of the incident reports going
before the Safety Committee to department directors
at Staff meeting. In this way, we can begin to
monitor safety issues and institute corrective
measures, if necessary.
Kudos go to the Director of
Administrative Services who took prompt action in
response to an e-mail from a customer that pointed
out less than stellar customer service processes in
place in our inspections division. All “deck
inspections” will be physically walked by the
inspector. All “dry in inspections” will be walked
by the inspector. All “finals” will be visually
inspected for all four plains of the roof. Due to
the fragility of the tile roofs, the inspectors will
not walk the final, but they will climb a ladder to
view the surface. Customer contact will be
attempted, if they are available, to determine
performance of the roof. Please remember customer
service is an integral part of the way we do
business.
The City Manager’s handout
discussed the issue of mistakes.
1. Don’t be careless
and make one mistake after another. Pay attention!
2. Watch out for the
big mistake that will kill you. Pay attention!
3. Don’t keep making
the same mistakes over and over. Pay attention!
4. (The Cardinal
Rule)
The mistake you make is not nearly so important as
what you do to recover from it. Pay attention!
We are human, and we will make mistakes.
Don’t deny them.
Don’t try to transfer blame to others.
Don’t act like a victim. (Even though being a
victim seems to be very popular these days, you
should refuse to adopt what I call the “Psychology
of Victimology”.
Do accept that something went wrong.
Do immediately begin working on a solution.
Do make sure the solution is reasonable and that
it’s powerful enough to help correct the error.
Administrative
Services reported that building
permits from the application date are generally
taking five weeks for commercial permits, three
weeks for residential permits, and three weeks for
miscellaneous permits (ie. pool cages, fences,
etc.). Roofing permits are being turned around in 3
days. Our goal for issuance of permits is two weeks
with the exception of commercial, which we’re hoping
to be able to cut down to three or four weeks. Once
we are successful in the hiring of additional staff,
our turnaround time should demonstrate marked
improvement.
Human Resources reminded directors
of the hurricane stress management seminar coming
up.
Department of
Community Development
turned in a list of construction-oriented
projects that are either in the final design or in
the bidding process. The City Manager will review
the list and develop a plan for transfer to Public
Works or Administrative Services for project
management.
Fire Department
received a letter from the Insurance Services Rating
Agency. We do have changes, such as Station #3
opening, which could possibly improve our rating.
However, the County has relocated one of their
stations that may adversely impact on our
evaluation.
Administrative
Services reminded everyone of the
website design committee meeting on Friday at
2:00 p.m. at the Police Department
Training Room. In addition, a memo is forthcoming
regarding application for a FEMA grant for hurricane
damage mitigation.
Police Department
will be meeting with Regional State Probation
Officers regarding the sex offender program. The
probation officers will ride with our officers to
check on their clients. The new roof is scheduled
to be installed on the
Public
Safety
Building on May 16th. Do
the Right Thing had a program in the City Council
Chambers. The DTRT annual banquet in
Fort Myers is on June 10th.
There are still tickets available. By the way,
kudos to our Detective Division for their leadership
in solving one of the recent bank robberies that
occurred in our city.
Public Works is assisting the
Southwest Florida Water Management District in
gearing up for the cleaning of debris in Alligator
Creek. SWFWMD is in the process of locating debris
storage areas, wherein they plan to use roll off
containers to store the debris prior to removal.
The list of possible sites will be copied to all
directors for their input, and then forwarded to
City Council for approval. They will have SWFWMD at
the Council meeting in case there are any questions.
In case there are any questions
from customers, the dumpsters currently in
Gilchrist
Park are there to hold debris from
the damaged sidewalks that are being reconstructed.
