The City Manager has received good feedback on the recent Council workshop.  We plan to schedule more of them in the future to inform Council on progress of specific projects.

The “Be Prepared – Hurricane Preparedness” brochure that the City put out in the past will be updated.  The Police Chief will have a draft ready in a month.

At the recent joint City/County meeting, the County reaffirmed its position to retain the Punta Gorda Library at its current location.  The County is also looking to locate a regional library facility in the South County area.

Human Resources reminded directors of the Interview Training a week from tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. to be held in the Police Department Training Room.  They will also have a new employment application form and processing method to be “unveiled” that day.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is beginning a study on US 41.  They will be looking at the busy intersections  and land use along Route 41.  Requesting the speed limit be reduced to 35 mph from the bridge down to Pompano was discussed.

Finance Department announced that they will restart their water shut-off enforcement program.  It had been suspended after Hurricane Charley. 

Police Department are taking any final comments on the Emergency Management Plan. 

Progress on the cleaning of the original City Hall continues as well as renovation of the second floor.  The City Clerk’s office should soon be able to move back in.

Administrative Services said that the generator bid for the City Hall Annex came in at $25,000.  This generator will be used to keep the MIS function operational during power outages.

Council Chambers will be painted this weekend.

The City will be embarking on a new project in the coming weeks.  A comprehensive review of our performance measures will be undertaken in order to accompany our efforts to set strategic objectives.  More information will be forthcoming.

Public Works was tardy in sending in their information for the recent weekly report, so we are communicating their efforts of last week today.

Public Works Department

Engineering:

  • Ponce de Leon Park fishing piers & Nature Walk:  FDEP permits on file.  Bid opening 6/03/05.  Procurement to compile information & prepare bid tabulation for department review.
  • Cooper Street drainage project:  Project completed. 
  • Bridge repairs:  Release of solicitation 4/19/05, bid opening held on 5/13/05; no vendors bid on project.  After meeting with contractors on 6/03/05, Public Works staff will reevaluate the scope of work with City forces performing the work.
  • BSI Mangrove Trimming:  FDEP permit received 05/26/05.
  • Downtown Flood Relief:  Joint Hazard Mitigation Grant Program & Flood Mitigation assistance application submitted to FEMA & State of Florida; response expected Jul. 05 – Jan. 06.
  • West Marion Ave./Aqui Esta/Bal Harbor Traffic Study:  Kimley-Horn is resubmitting revised proposal.
  • West Retta Esplanade design:  Procurement closed negotiations with Kimley-Horn.  Meeting scheduled with staff for 6/13/05 to review American Consulting’s proposal.

 

Right-of-Way:

  • Mary Street 97% completed; pending cleanup.  Project consisted of new sidewalk, curb and paving.
  • Replaced 4,875 ft. of Citywide storm related broken sidewalk; 90% completed FEMA funded.
  • 9 of the 42 hurricane road marking circles have been installed; expected completion week of 6/20/05.
  • Herald Courtyard clean up completed 6/09/05.

Parks & Grounds:

  • Cul-de-sac tree replacement began week of 5/16/05; target date to complete installation of 108 trees by 6/23/05.
  • Gilchrist Park gazebo erosion repair:  riprap replacement 50% complete.  Anticipated completion date week of 6/13/05 due to rain.
  • 13 of the 29 damaged City facility signs repaired; expected completion 7/16/05.
  • Damaged flagpole at Laishley Park removed; installation of new flagpole completed 6/08/05.

PGI Canal Maintenance:

  • Heavy rains over the past week have caused the failure of approximately 240 feet of seawall at three locations   – Lot 13 & 14, Block 178 on Woodthrush Dr. (100 feet), 1006 San Mateo Dr. (80 feet) and LaCosta Island Ct.             (60 feet) in PGI.  The rains have also delayed completion of other seawall and seawall cap replacement projects.
  • Seawall replacement on Columbian Dr. scheduled for completion week of 6/20/05 due to rain delay.
  • Work by division employees on seawall cap replacement at Woodthrush Dr. with 400’ has been completed; 100’ remain to be replaced; delayed due to rain.
  • Division maintenance crews have filled sinkholes at 36 locations.
