The most critical issues facing departments were listed.
For Utility Department, it is
water sources.
City Clerk’s Office is working
on scanning historical records. They have finished
ordinances and will start on resolutions.
Community Development’s most
critical project is the Harbor Project. They have
just completed Land Development Regulations. Their
Comprehensive Plan needs to be updated by the end of
the year.
Finance issues include the
budget, FEMA, and insurance.
Police Department is concerned
with getting their building in shape before this
year’s hurricane season. They are continually
updating their Emergency Plan. Work is beginning on
re- accreditation. If there is much more growth in
the City, they will have to look at staffing
levels. Police Department is starting a new program
called Adopt-A-Sex Offender. Police Officers will
be assigned to keep tabs on the seven sex offenders
that are living in Punta Gorda.
Public Works is mainly
concerned with their building/work area. They are
happy that post-storm counseling has been set up for
employees. Canal maintenance and sanitation may
have funding issues.
Fire Department is working on
their union contract. Station #2 needs replacing.
Another issue they are addressing is whether the
“Tentatorium” needs City or County permits. There
was an editorial as to whether the Charlotte
Performing Arts Center meets fire safety codes. It
does meet NFPA codes.
Human Resources are working
with the unions to come up with agreements. They
are working on recruitment for a
new City Attorney, but have no
responses yet. They are trying to improve their
image with employees. Increasing health insurance
costs will be an issue. Recruiting entry level
positions is difficult in this market.
Administrative Services has
been bombarded with work since the Hurricane,
especially Building and Procurement. Authorization
has been given to hire more people in building
department. Demolition starts today on the
auditorium. Dennis Murphy
is on the design team for the new auditorium. Work
on the Courthouse will begin soon.
