City Hall News … and the continuation of
“CITY GOVERNMENT FROM THE GROUND UP”

by Marilyn Smith-Mooney
Senior Council Member & Former Mayor
October, 2004

WHY SUCH AN ABBREVIATED COLUMN?

Individual resident and city government concerns have had me on overload daily ever since Charley's unwelcome visit.  And, contrary to a recent Charlotte SUN editorial, "Council Members Missing in Action," my husband will not-so-happily tell

you that in my case, it was more like "Wife Missing in Action!", as I was not outside this city for one day including August 13th.  From what I've been told, I apparently was the only council member people could reach by phone and e-mail during the initial critical days after Charley when no one was able to reach anything other than a very busy police department phone line.  I kept relaying important messages to the City Manager, answering residents' questions or referring them to appropriate individuals or phone numbers, responding to a batch of residents' e-mails, extensively researching the "roof tile" issue, offering suggestions to the City Manager, attending weekly Tri-County Hurricane Relief Steering Committee Meetings, providing input to and drafting our city's list of over 40 funding requests to be included in various state and federal appropriations bills our area's representatives were to introduce to the floor at state and federal levels, and have myself prepared for the first Regular City Council Meeting to be held since before Charley.  And, some of you might have even seen me on CNN accompanying a Tampa TV news reporter for a walking interview through downtown Punta Gorda a mere few days after the Charley telling how I know this community's spirit will make its recovery, re-build result in a BEST CITY becoming EVEN BETTER -- THE BEST-EST!

BUT ... IN THE MEANTIME, IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH OF YOU MAKE IT A POINT TO ATTEND THE COUNCIL MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6 AT 9 AM IN CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS WHETHER YOU WANT TO VOICE CONCERNS OR HEAR IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND DISCUSSIONS.

I DO hope to see many of you sufficiently concerned about your city to be in attendance!
