Lovely Retta
by Jan Murphy
September, 2004

Author's Note:  I wrote this in draft form prior to hurricane Charley but I promised myself I would write it just as I intended.  This is one of my favorite streets and it has seen incredible devastation as has almost every part of our beautiful town.  We took a mighty punch but I know we’ll soon be back, standing tall and proud again. Coming across the Route 41 bridge heading back to my home in Punta Gorda Isles, I always head

for Rettta Esplanade.  From the frenzied traffic and congestion of Tamiami Trail, I find the serenity of this beautiful street pulls me in immediately-- so take a little ride with me.  The first thing that comes upon you is a wonderful quiet calm that makes you want you just say “aah”.  As you look to the right you see the glistening water of Charlotte Harbor and to your left the quaint beautiful homes of historic Punta Gorda, all different and charming each in their own special way,  beautifully landscaped and, some, even hidden a bit from the eyes of the casual observer.

Looking straight ahead are the tall and majestic royal palm trees which appear to be standing at attention as they guide your way. Taking a little tour and turning into the first circle drive on the water side you see a variety of beautiful foliage and trees. A covered picnic area and gazebo is the site for a myriad of activities from a night of jazz or country music to a group of friends meeting to enjoy the view or watch one of the amazing sunsets over Charlotte Harbor.  Over a bit farther is a long pier jutting out into the water where you may see a couple holding hands and enjoying their peaceful surroundings.

Continuing down the street you see the bight primary colors of the playground that’s enjoyed by residents and the many children who come to visit from the frozen north.  How fun to climb the Jungle Jim or play on the slide with the water as your backdrop. A little further down are the tennis courts, the Charlotte County YMCA, where you may attend a yoga class among other activities and, lastly, the Punta Gorda Boating Club.

We’ve reached the end of this lovely ride but I’ll do it again and again because I love it and see something new each time.  The morning is different than the afternoon and of course at sunset it’s spectacular from any spot.  Once nightfall comes, the old fashioned street lights guide your way and the homes light up with the vitality one knows is inside, as well as in all of us who love this life in Punta Gorda.
