normal place of work. If we can be of help,
please call Rick at 575-6363
The
Kiwanis Club of Punta Gorda
(a PGBA member) is alive and well, except, we do not
have a meeting place since Aug. 13. We were meeting
at Best Western Waterfront hotel in Punta Gorda. We
need a restaurant, church, or meeting site to
handle about 80 of our 116 club members on
Thursday's from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Lunch can be
provided or catered in.
Our members also suffered serious damages to their homes and/or
businesses,
but,
there are some of us that are working to help
children's needs in the area. We are receiving funds
from the Florida Kiwanis Foundation and Kiwanis
Clubs all over Florida and around the nation. To
date we have bought 440 $25 gift certificate cards
thanks to WalMart in Port Charlotte at a discounted
rate. We are helping very needy school kids who have
specific needs. Also, next week, we will have 2,000
pair of girls shoes being sent from the east coast
thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale by the Sea;
200 backpacks filled with school supplies from the
Miami-Lating Kiwanis Club, and the list goes on.
It is important that we have a temporary meeting
site every Thursday, til' further notice that would
be available in the Punta Gorda area, or Charlotte
Harbor, Port Charlotte.
You can contact me via my home e-mail address,
carp813@comcast.net which I can access from my
office since our cable line is down and will be for
some time in Port Charlotte where I live near Meadow
Park Elementary. My office phone is 575-5252.
THANK YOU!
Bob "Carp" Carpenter
Punta Gorda Kiwanis
Secretary

we survived hurricane Charlie and are getting back

it also. For all my patients we are open for eye
examinations, cataract evaluations and glaucoma
diagnosis and treatment. In addition we just
received a special camera that documents macular
degeneration. We are located next to Publix in the
Burnt Store shopping center on US41. Our phone
number is 637-6100.
Good
luck to all of you.

Most
of you know that I am president of First Community
Bank in Port Charlotte ( we are the one with the
silver PT Cruiser courier), and like the other banks
in the area, we are working hard to assist people
with their financial needs. What you do not know,
is that I play guitar with worship
leader and recording artist Bob Suter and The
Manger. The band would very much like to play
and/or take the lead in a community wide,
non-denominational worship event, or we will also
play in money raising events for storm victims, or
even for something as specific as rebuilding Church
of The Good Shepard. All the band members are firm
in our conviction that we will not accept money, and
that any money raised goes to the community or
specific cause. Due to logistics in deploying
people and equipment, we only ask that the event be
planned for a Sunday mid-afternoon or evening. If
there is interest, you may call me at the bank
627-8550. God bless the people of Charlotte County;
we will be back stronger than ever!

This
is an update on Church of The Good
Shepherd (Episcopal) and the
Good Shepherd Day School.
The church and
school complex suffered major damage. Initial loss
estimate will exceed $1 million. The church
sanctuary will not be usable until late December or
sometime in January. I am hoping we can hold our
Christmas Eve services in the church and am pressing
the restoration work for that target date.
CURRENTLY, ALL WORSHIP SERVICES (SUNDAY AT 8 AND 10
A.M. / WEDNESDAY AT 9:30 A.M) ARE BEING HELD IN THE
GREAT FELLOWSHIP HALL. (We are blessed that no
damage was done to our stained glass windows,
including the 1896
Tiffany Window over the altar.)
SCHOOL: We are bringing in modular classrooms for
our primary school; part of our preschool will move
into the modulars and part will relocate for a few
months to First Baptist in PG.
SERVEPRO is handling all our disaster recovery
efforts.
WE WILL REBUILD PUNTA GORDA!

office has moved temporarily to Koch & Company,
CPAs, 225 West Virginia Avenue, Punta Gorda. Our
phone number remains the same: 637-0077. The
Foundation offices, located in the A.C. Freeman
House on East Hargreaves in Punta Gorda, have
been compromised with Charlie's wrath that has left
so many windows broken and the inside of the house
(with its antiques, crystal, and lovely rugs)
devastated. This 1903 Victorian home that was saved
from demolition in 1985 will also need a new roof
and chimney, along with many repairs both inside and
out. We have received confirmation, however, that
the house is still structurally sound and
renovations will begin as soon as possible. Many,
many thanks to Rex Koch and his staff for their
graciousness and for helping to bring some
"normalcy" to our lives. For additional information,
please contact Carolyn Freeland, Executive Director
at 637-0077.

The
Punta Gorda Historical Society,
along with the rest of our community post -
'Charley', has much work and rebuilding to do. The
Woman's Club Building suffered extreme damage and
will be closed for at least 6-8 months; the History
Park was also hard hit, especially the Cigar
Cottage; the Railroad Depot standing firmly, but
not undamaged. The early stages of assessment and
cleanup are underway, as witnessed Sunday morning
when a dozen or more volunteers continued cleanup at
the History Park. A schedule of meetings will be
announced in the near future.

Hello
from Karen and Earl In Paradise.
This is a blanket message to everyone, forgive us?
There are 265 messages to deal with.
We are safe, well, and have a Blue Tarp Roof, Walls,
windows, Electricity and Air Conditioning. We used
to own 2 mobile homes, now we own one and a nice lot
on
the water.
Acme Bicycle Survives, but I'm afraid the
building will be a long time a re-building. We have
a verbal agreement on a new location not far from
down town. We were insured and have disposed of the
inventory through our insurance company, will buy
all new for reopening. We saved some tools, and
fixtures, and will replace those lost with insurance
money.
The help offered through the Red Cross and FEMA and
others was beyond belief. Plenty of water, food,
and ice. Too much to list in this short note. The
devastation too was beyond belief, now that things
have slowed and settled, we both get choked up when
we see our little house on the canal and the
neighbors whose homes are now piles of rubble. Some
with out a wall standing. We are fortunate in deed!
Watch our web site for pictures and more information
as time allows. I am trying to catch up while
waiting for Frances to make up its mind. Our cell
phones work, and I have plugged into the neighbors
telephone line to work on the internet.

Good
luck everyone!!!
All of our buildings were totally destroyed
and condemned and I needed to come up with some
quick options. As a result of that we are operating
out of a trailer, but we are enjoying some success
in spite of this great challenge. Please keep me
informed and I'm anxious to be part of the "New
Building of Punta Gorda"
Respectfully,

We still have no cable or internet, but Home Depot
in Ft Myers has free internet access (hooray).Harbor
Audiology sustained alot of damage to the
building and we are temporarily located in Dr.
Klucka office at 100 Madrid, suite 112. Fortunately
our equipment is fine and we expect to be back in
full operation within 3 weeks. Now we are seeing
any patient who needs help with their hearing aid at
our temporary location. Additionally I am
volunteering at Hearing Impaired Services (HIP) on
Sandhill Blvd. every Tuesday and Friday. Anyone who
needs help with their hearing/hearing aid will be
seen for free at that location. I have arranged
with a hearing instrument manufacturer to donate
small drying kits for hearing aids. These will be
given out at HIP as well. Hearing aids hate the
high humidity; we have been doing a lot of repairs
for folks.
I am glad to hear so
many of the Alliance members are coming back
fighting.

Friends throughout Punta Gorda,
The Congregational United Church, 1201 Aqui
Esta Drive suffered damage to both our sanctuary and
fellowship room, which has not allowed us to offer
any direct help to those affected in our community.
We lost both our stained glass windows and another
large one in the sanctuary,
causing significant damage from water and wind. We
are now dried out, both on the roof and on the
inside, so our rebuilding will be able to start very
soon.
We are worshiping each Sunday at 10:30 and know that
wonderful blessings are being experienced throughout
our community.
The congregation was scheduled to celebrate our 20th
anniversary of ministry in Punta Gorda this October
17th, but we may have to hold off on that a few
weeks. We'll keep the community informed.
As the Chaplain for the Punta Gorda Police
Department, I know all of you are aware of the hard
work they and their fellow law enforcement brothers
and sisters from around the state are providing to
Punta Gorda. They are on 12 hour shifts and have a
day off each week. When you have the chance to see
one of these folk, feel free to express your thanks,
because I know they care about this community, its
people AND businesses. The Fire and EMS Personnel
are also serving above and beyond the call. Bless
them all!
