Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association Update
September 6, 2004

Present Building – 1800 West Marion

Jack will usually be at the building in the morning.  Until power and air is restored he will normally be off on other tasks later in the day.  The phone (637-1655) is in service.

The building has been more severely damaged than originally thought.  The center section of the building is basically beyond recovery with ceiling collapses in rooms 1 & 5 and the Civettes gift shop.  The main auditorium has had enough water incursions to make mold and mildew elimination impractical.  Future long-term use of the office and kitchen area is in doubt.

Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association Hurricane Charley Update

We are currently having room 7 and the adjacent rooms tested for mold and mildew.  This area has a separate air handling system and can be isolated from the remainder of the building
and may be usable for some of our activities and daily operations.

We are also investigating alternative plans in case we cannot return to the present building.

It appears that most routine activities will be suspended until at least October unless individual activities can arrange temporary accommodations.

Equipment and Furniture Loans:
We regret that all "Loaners" will have to be discontinued until salvageable items can be properly sanitizd.

New Building – 2001 Shreve St.
The walls that were constructed blew down because cement was not available for the tie beams.  As materials become available construction will resume.  Our building will be delayed but construction will continue.  We did discuss deferring construction to make resources available for other rehabilitation and reconstruction but this was not felt to be necessary by our contractor.  Losses will be covered by the builders insurance.
The new move-in target date is May 2005.

Roofing:
City Council has changed City Code to permit “Cement or clay tile or metal roofs” in PGI.  As the Land Regulating Ordinance is in the final stages of review and approval we will work with the city to define acceptable metal roofs.  THE CITY WILL NOT BE PERMITTING ANY ADDITIONAL SHINGLE ROOFS IN PGI.

The Commentator:
The Commentator was ready for printing when Charley visited.  The present issue does not represent our present status and a new issue will be forthcoming when possible.  In the meantime we will be using pgica.org and possibly puntagordalife.com as much as possible to provide information.

Motor Homes:
The City has stated that during the reconstruction of homes in PGI, temporary living quarters such as motor homes will be permitted.  Contact City Hall for permitting requirements.

Vacant Lot Clean-up:
Clean-up of vacant lots is the owner’s responsibility. Debris on the street edge of vacant lots will be picked up.  There will be more than one sweep for debris.

Canal Clean-up:
We have been advised that the City
has contracted for removal of debris from the canals.  IN THE MEANTIME USE EXTREME CAUTION NAVIGATING THE CANALS.
