Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association Hurricane Charley Update
August 23, 2004

Present Building – 1800 West Marion

The building is presently being evaluated to determine if it can be used by the Association.

The front lobby, has moderate damage, the auditorium the usual leaks, room #1 some water damage, room #4 appears ok as is the gift shop.  The middle entrance has flooded, room #5 the ceiling has collapsed. Room #7 and storage areas seem OK.

We are very concerned that mildew and /or structural damage may impact building use.

We are currently having the electrical, water and air conditioning checked as well as looking at temporary roof repairs.  Our goal is to see if we can get the office/reception, auditorium, and rooms 1, 4, & 7 in service at minimal cost.

We are also investigating alternative plans in case we cannot return to the present building.

WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE BEING ABLE TO USE THE BUILDING BEFORE LABOR DAY AT THE EARLIAST.

New Building – 2001 Shreve St.

The walls that were constructed blew down because cement was not available for the tie beams.  As materials become available construction will resume.  Our building will be delayed but construction will continue.  We did discuss deferring construction to make resources available for other rehabilitation and reconstruction but this was not felt to be necessary by our contractor.  Losses will be covered by the builders insurance.

Roofing

The City Manager has used his emergency powers to waive current roofing restrictions.  We do recognize that much of the damage was done by roof tiles.  It appears that the majority of our members (those we have heard from) are concerned over future potential roof tile damage but support the continued use of properly installed tiles (clay, concrete or aluminum – barrel or flat) and many support the use of high quality tin roofs where architecturally appropriate.  There appears to be strong opposition to permitting the use of asphalt shingles.

We are proposing that metal (Florida style tin) roofs be added as approved roofing where architecturally appropriate but asphalt shingles NOT be approved for PGI.  (We believe BSI is also taking this position.)

This position (with board consensus) will be provided to the city manager and councilpersons.

Note: You paid for quality decorative roofs and use of shingles could negatively impact both aesthetics and property value.

The Commentator

The Commentator was ready for printing when Charley visited.  The present issue does not represent our present status and a new issue will be forthcoming when possible.  In the meantime we will be using pgica.org and puntagordalife.com as much as possible to provide information.

MOTOR HOMES

It is anticipated that during the reconstruction of homes in PGI that temporary living quarters such as motor homes will be permitted.  We will update as information is available.
